To over-egg the pudding is to put in too much effort, or try too hard, and actually spoil whatever it is you’re doing.

For a small theatre, I think they have a tendency to over-egg the pudding by trying to put on too many plays in a year. When you’re writing a horror novel, is very easy to over egg the pudding with horrible happenings.
