To take something to heart means to take it seriously and be affected by it.

Now, don’t take what he said to heart. He was only joking. When I was young I took even the slightest criticism to heart and was very concerned with what people thought of me. As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to realise that people are too busy being concerned with themselves to really think very much of anyone else.
