To batter someone up is to flatter them with the intention of getting something in return.
Examples of Usage of Butter up
if you really want me to give you a pay rise, you could at least try buttering me up instead of complaining all the time. It doesn’t really matter how much you try to butter him up, he’s never going to give you what you want.
